Sculptures by Boleslaw Marschall

Boleslaw Marschall, a sculptor born on 20th June 1938
in Torun. He graduated at the State College of Fine Arts in Gdansk, where in 1962 he got his degree in the Faculty of Sculpture at Professor Stanislaw Horno-Poplawski's studio. Additionally, he studied architectural-sculpture design at Professor Adam Smolana's studio.

Since 1963 he has been connected with Warmia and
Mazury, and especially with Olsztyn and Reszel. At the beginning of his artistic career he worked on a series of sculptures commemorating Doctor Janusz Korczak. Among
the others he carved a low relief for the Children's Hospital
in Olsztyn and granite busts for universities in Hannover and Giessen and for the Janusz Korczak Association in Paris.
At the subsequent stage of his artistic work he made
sculptures dedicated to Mikolaj Kopernik on the five-hundredth anniversary of the great astronomer's birth (1973). They are located in Lidzbark Warminski, Ilawa and Mragowo. One of the busts went as far as Philadelphia.

Works devoted to martyrdom and victims of World War II make another, still very significant chapter of his artistic work. In 1972 he won the competition to carve a monument in honour of Heroes of Warmia and Mazury Liberation Struggle.
A 120-tonne sandstone monument, made by the artist in person, is located in Olsztyn. Many other sculptures are in military cemeteries (e.g. in Braniewo, Zawady near Ostróda, Olsztyn). Boleslaw Marschall also carved a lot of tombstones, generally to private orders, for well-known people associated with Warmia and Mazury, e.g. Bogumil Linka, Jan Maksaj, Cardinal Gulbinowicz's mother or Marian Gotowiec, first vice-chancellor of the Agricultural College in Olsztyn.

Simultaneously with his artistic work, for over twenty five years (from 1972) Boleslaw Marschall together with his wife Jolanta administered the castle in Reszel. At that time not only the castle obtained financial independence, but they also founded the art centre of European renown and managed to gather around the castle gallery many famous artists. Such celebrities as Stasys Eidrigevicius, Franciszek Starowiejski, Adam Myjak, Kiejstut Bereznicki, Andrzej Fogt, Teresa Pagowska, Bozena Biskupska, Lech Okolów, Maria Anto are only some of them.

Today Boleslaw Marschall solely focuses on art. His
works are not so monumental as years before because
- as he says himself - stone gets harder and heavier with age. Nevertheless his busts and garden statutes delight us with this elusive spirit which forms the borderline between craft and art.
