The headquarters of the German land forces were built simultaneously with Hitler’s headquarters in Gierłoż, which is only 15 km away in a straight line. In the years 1940-1944 40 huge bunkers, air-raid shelters and supplementary buildings were constructed between Lake Mamry and a railway track Kętrzyn-Węgorzewo. From there the military attack on the Soviet Union was commanded. It was here that general Gehlen worked. He was the head of intelligence service for eastern Europe, who after the war formed spy rings for the USA. It was also a place where many diplomatic representatives of the German allies were accommodated. Almost 30 concrete structures remained up to this day and they are open to the public. |
