A palace-and-park complex picturesquely situated between two lakes was for almost 500 years the residence of the Lehndorff family. It is probable that they were related to Dytryk Stange, who came with the first crusaders from Meisen to the Chełmno Province. It was much later, after they had moved in the neighbourhood, that they adopted the name Lehndorff. The palace was built on the foundations of the former building in the years 1689-1700. Simultaneously an extensive park was set up. It has partly survived up to this day. In the years 1941-1944 Joachim Ribbentrop, the Nazi foreign minister, had his private apartments in the palace. The last owner, count Heinrich Lehndorff, who was accused of collaboration with colonel Stauffenberg in making an attempt on Hitler’s life at nearby Wilczy Szaniec (Wolfsschanze), was arrested and executed in 1944. | |
